A Landmark Gathering for the T1D Community
From October 9–11, 2026, Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) held its inaugural Clinical & Research Congress in Philadelphia, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders in the fight against Type 1 diabetes. The three-day event drew world-renowned clinicians, researchers, scientists, healthcare professionals, industry leaders, people living with T1D, and community advocates to share findings and discuss the future of T1D care.
The Congress was structured around a central mission: to connect scientific discovery with clinical practice and patient needs. According to Dr. Thomas Danne, Chief Medical Officer, International for Breakthrough T1D, "The most valuable discussions were the ones that connected those questions. That is how we make research more useful to the clinicians and communities it is meant to serve."
A Wide Range of Research and Clinical Topics
The Congress featured more than 80 sessions covering the breadth of current T1D research and care. Topics ranged from traditional endocrinology and discovery science to cutting-edge immunotherapies, artificial intelligence, digital twins, islet cell therapies, and disease-modifying approaches.
Access to care for the T1D community was also a major focus, reflecting recognition that scientific advances must translate into treatments available to people who need them. This comprehensive agenda underscored the reality that Type 1 diabetes research is advancing on multiple fronts simultaneously.
Multiple Routes to Progress
Dr. Sanjoy Dutta, Chief Scientific Officer at Breakthrough T1D, highlighted the diversity of approaches being pursued across the field. "The breadth of research presented here shows how many routes scientists are pursuing" toward new treatments and better understanding of T1D.
This multi-faceted approach reflects the complexity of Type 1 diabetes and the recognition that no single strategy will address the needs of all patients. By exploring immunotherapy, technology, regenerative approaches, and other avenues simultaneously, researchers increase the chances of meaningful breakthroughs.
